Being only 20 years old, I could only stand by and look sadly at the fun I would be able to have in two months.

Las Vegas's gaudiness and excess is truly enchanting, and wonderful for a day or two. I'll definitely do a full write-up when I go back and spend some more time.

The drive from Las Vegas to the greater Los Angeles area takes you straight through the scorching Mojave Desert, passing through towns like Barstow whose economies are built upon being oversized restrooms. But there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Newport Beach is an affluent beach town in Orange County, an hour's drive from LA proper. We rented bikes and toured the peninsula which contains a marina and beautiful homes.
